I put this warp on my big loom sometime after Christmas. It is made up of blue and white cotton stripes, but it is not symmetrical. Which suits me just fine. No matter what I plan with a new project, it becomes an exploration of the materials and the relationship between the textures and the colors. I should say “values” since I work mostly with natural colors1 in wool and cotton. All my life, weaving (or any making, to be honest) has to be squeezed in between other obligations.
To paraphrase the brilliant textile artist, Judy Martin2, “I am a woman, a wife and a mother, I am often interrupted.” I have been following her lead, letting the interruptions become part of the work. When I get interrupted and come back to the loom (sometimes several days later) I make it a point to start a new pattern in my weaving.
Nowadays, my interruptions come from my cats more than my kids. However, I do still love to play with the patterns.
Here are my glamour shots of the new fabric. It was really too hot to be playing with yards and yards of wool, but the light was perfect.
I hope you are all finding some fun despite the hot weather!
Open Studio/Community Craft Circle will be Friday August 4th from 6-9pm.
See more details in last week’s post.
I will use natural dyes such as indigo or logwood -but that is another post, for sure.
