In the Before-times, my husband and I would drive to The Adirondack Mountains where I was a guest artisan at Silver Bay YMCA Conference and Family Retreat Center. A good friend, Stephanie S., recommended me to the Program Coordinator in 2017 and we went for the next three summers. And, right now, we are on our way back!
Silver Bay, (besides views like this) has a long tradition of offering adult and children crafting opportunities beyond the basics that include silversmithing, basket-making, stained glass, quilting and weaving. The Squire Craft Building is a lovely old post and beam barn. The weaving studio is a newish addition with AC and lots of old looms.
As school teachers, our vacations have always generally been low-budget, and this fits that bill. We have friends and family in Ohio, Kentucky and Western NY who are happy to see us and will put us up for a night or two. So, we meander across the USA stopping to see Ancient Mounds, Historical Forts and Houses, bookstores and Fiber Art destinations on our way to Upstate New York.
We will be stopping at The Woolery in Frankfurt, KY on Tuesday, July 19th. Let me know if you would like any tools or supplies from there- I can save you shipping costs! I might not have room for a floor-loom, just saying. But, for big stuff we really should patronize Mary Berry at Fancy Fibers.
Misti will be in charge for Open Studio Hours on Wednesday evenings. She knows her way around the tools and supplies. AND, I can still be reached while I am on the road.
We stopped at the South Union Shaker Village in Kentucky. They were once famous for their wool and silk fabric!
I plan to be back by August 9th, plenty of time to get ready for the next:
SUNDAY PLOP-DOWN AND MAKE SOMETHING
5-7pm on August 14th
I hope all of you are finding fun ways to stay cool!
Safe travels! Can’t wait to hear more about it!
That camp sounds like heaven! Can't wait to hear about it-be safe on the road! -Carly Payne
