Summer at Oil and Cotton always means ART CAMP! It is a time-honored tradition and loads of fun. Also, loads of work for staff. This summer we are blessed with a lovely group of volunteers and paid interns who are bringing all their skills to make camp great! And the new space is simply perfect for kid’s camps.
I have been dodging camp-related responsibilities by hiding in the Textile Studio and filling up my calendar with Open Studio Hours.
I did peek out long enough to say “yes” to a Two-Day Weaving Camp for Teens. and I am so glad I did! I had six amazing humans in the Studio and they made delightful works.
When I was at Fancy Fibers, last week, Mary Berry suggested a hoop loom project and then proceeded to gift me with all the materials for the camp. I showed the campers her sample and they LOVED it.
The campers really enjoyed using the studio drum carder to make custom colors from richly dyed roving (made by the one and only Four Eyed Ewe, Victoria O).
I introduced them to some useful knots: half-hitch, double half-hitch, square, and lark’s head. They also used twining, plain weave, Egyptian knot and chainstitch to achieve their textural dreams.
While we are on this topic: check out Carly’s IG for more circular loom beauty!
