I am reading a history book called Viking London and it got me thinking about one of my favorite topics: Ancient Mounds in America. What kind of civilization might have grown here without intruders. And yet, London was shaped by intruders, conquerors and merchants.
But, before I started reading this book, I went to Penn Farm at Cedar Hill State Park with the Dallas Handweavers and Spinners Guild. Six doughty fiber artist wrapped ourselves in hand-spun, hand-knit splendor and gathered at the Farm to do what we love to do: demonstrating fiber art skills for the general public. It was bloody* cold even though we were set up indoors.
There were three looms, one treadle wheel (Maja Craft), three e-spinners, knitting needles and me and Hillary with our spindles. Delightful fun!
I have been a member of three Fiber Arts Guilds in my life: Dallas Handweavers and Spinners Guild, The Over the Wheel Gang of Lancaster, TX, and a local guild in Wheaton.IL. I let my membership lapse in all three as life (and child raising) moved my focus from my interests to the needs of others.
But, now! In my semi-retired state, I am ready to join the ranks of folks who love to go down textile-art rabbit holes. Experimenting with material and techniques for the pure pleasure of knowing more. I learned so much from the other women that evening.
I also appreciate the fact that young ones, like Hillary, are not intimidated by the challenges but pursue their interests with passion.
