Laurel W. and I drove many-a mile east and north to Farmersville, our goal was to meet Mary Berry and set up an “account” for weaving supplies. Fancy Fibers is a weaver’s dream come true. Since I had not shopped in-person for wool and weaving tools in so long, I was a little light-headed.
I was able to hand-select some vibrant warp cones - guided by my Honor Student, Toya T., and her meticulous research. She texted me the batch number and I found what she wanted- plus, a cone of teal. No shipping required. It’s like old times.
I really hit it off with Mary, turns out we have so many mutual friends we can’t figure out why we haven’t met before… oh wait, we took the same workshop with Norm Kennedy in 1999. We were quoting his many witticisms to one another, because we are both fan-girls: Norm and the Marshfield School of Weaving are national treasures.
I bought a lovely Kromski Rigid Heddle Loom for the studio- it came with a stand and so many great accessories. Since I decided to have a community studio (thank you Shannon and Kayli for helping me realize this dream) I have been collecting odds and ends of weaving equipment. More often than not, when I go to collect one item, the seller gives me a trunk full of extra stuff. This gives members and students a chance to “try before you buy.” Mary Berry has the same idea and she has WAY more floor looms than I have.
If you are looking for a fun day trip, I strongly recommend going to Farmersville. There are two yarn shops for knitters, in addition to Fancy Fibers.
